Vero e proprio villaggio di campagna, Greenwich Village divenne il rifugio della popolazione newyorkese durante un'epidemia di febbre gialla nel 1822. La sua natura campagnola si riflette nel disordinato intrico di strade che non si è mai adattato alla planimetria urbana di New York. Greenwich Village rimase perciò una piccola città nel cuore della Grande Mela, diventando il riparo per artisti e scrittori famosi. Oggi Greenwich Village è un quartiere popolare tra gli omosessuali, anche se sta crescendo il numero di studenti della New York University che vi vengono a soggiornare. Qui potrete trovare tracce di Edgar Allan Poe, E. E. Cummings e, se passate per Gay Street, potrete vedere uno dei set di "Carlito's Way".
